Job Description

St Mary’s Church and Centre Caretaker.

Main Purpose of the Role

A career opportunity has arisen to contribute to the ministry of St Mary’s Camberley, by ensuring that the Church and Centre premises and grounds are maintained to a high standard and accessible for users.

This career/role entails significant face-to-face service to people from the church, community and users of the building as well as direct responsibility for physical and technical resources.

Employer: St Mary’s Parochial Church Council (PCC)

Post Responsible to:  Community Network officer

Post responsible for: Cleaning staff (currently subcontracted)

Days/Times: To Be Agreed – 15 hours per week; evening and weekend work required

Hourly Rate: £9 per hour

Holiday: 84 hours pa:  pro rata for the remainder of 2016

Duties and Responsibilities

Overall Responsibility: To Ensure Effective Operation of the Church and Church Centre by undertaking tasks or seeing that they are done well by others

Outline Duties:

  • High Standards: Daily site inspection to ensure the building and external areas are kept clean and tidy, with rubbish being promptly removed
  • Room Setup: Prepare rooms for users, liaising closely with other team members to ensure that requirements are understood
  • Security: Open and lock up the Church and Centre as required. To deal with emergencies as appropriate
  • Cleaning: Undertake some regular cleaning plus emergency clean up as needed: to supervise cleaning staff
  • Repairs: Carry out minor repairs, call in contractors as necessary & supervise them
  • Support: Give general assistance in the daily running of the Church & Centre
  • Maintenance: Regular activities include checking and ensuring servicing of fire alarm, heating and other equipment in line with established processes
  • Health & Safety: Daily overseeing/safeguarding of Health & Safety in the Church and Centre & prompt response to issues that arise, promoting good practice at all times.  Compiling and contributing to Risk Assessments related to the Church & Centre
  • Face to Face Service: Liaising with many users – hirers, visitors, church members and attenders and staff
  • Emergency Call Out: to be part of an emergency call out rota
  • To undertake other appropriate duties: as requested by manager in line with the duties and level of the post

Person Specification

The successful caretaker will have the following Essential and ideally the Desirable Qualities:


  1. A committed Christian faith, demonstrated in practice and consistent with the values and vision of the church (Genuine Occupational Requirement as “key point of contact” for users of the building)
  2. Proven skills in premises and facilities operation and practical maintenance (excellent DIY skills, practical skills, good at working with tools, basic plumbing abilities for unblocking sinks, traps and wastepipes, basic carpentry skills and ability to mend items e.g. door handles, a good understanding of repair/maintenance issues)
  3. Ability to life and move equipment and furniture
  4. Good inter-personal skills and customer relationship skills, with the ability to communicate well by the telephone
  5. To be comfortable with using and managing modern office, and other, equipment
  6. Computer literacy, including receiving and sending emails and attachments
  7. Experience of team working and handling unexpected situations as they arise
  8. The ability to deal confidently with contractors and suppliers
  9. To be an efficient, disciplined and orderly person with the ability to work calmly and efficiently under pressure, work independently, prioritizing effectively, positive and proactive, and flexible
  10. Willingness to undertake training such as First Aid, Handling and Lifting. COSHH/VDU safety and other Health and Safety training, Food Safety in Catering


  1. Handling and Lifting awareness
  2. To hold a First Aid Qualification and a Food Safety on Catering Qualification
  3. Training in/familiarity with Health and Safety las and practice and commercial cleaning practices including COSHH
  4. The ability to learn computer systems and software
